Tana Hoban

Tana Hoban (1917-2006) est née à Philadelphie de parents d’origine russe. Elle étudie la peinture, puis la photographie dans une école des beaux-arts et se spécialise dans les portraits d’enfants. Edward Steichen, photographe et directeur de la photographie au MoMa de New York, l’exposera dans « Six femmes photographes », aux côtés de Helen Levitt et de Dorothea Lange, puis en 1955 dans la fameuse exposition «Family of Man». Ses premiers albums paraissent chez Macmillan en 1970 grâce à Susan Hirschman, son éditrice, qui avec une grande fidélité publiera ensuite près de cinquante albums chez Greenwillow Books. Ses albums de photographie, en noir et blanc ou en couleurs, sont des vecteurs de perception, de narration et de rêve qu’elle destine aux plus petits.
Tana Hoban a vécu à Paris où elle a poursuivi son travail jusqu’à sa mort en 2006. C’est à Isabel Finkenstaedt que l’on doit la publication de ses livres en France aux éditions Kaléidoscope. En 2001 Les Trois Ourses ont publié Traces d’ancêtres perdus et son autobiographie Regarde bien / Look again : les albums photographiques de Tana Hoban.
